PROJECTS

Substance Abuse

Drug addiction statistics are quite stark. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health which collects information on drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and addiction for people 12 years and older in the US, more than twenty million people had a substance use disorder.

The Covid pandemic only exacerbated the situation as there are now reports of increased adult drinking and drug use and fatal drug overdoses. The need for drug and alcohol rehabilitation is great as the population for it continues, sadly, to grow.

But first, we need to understand what is addiction? Substance abuse (drug abuse or alcohol abuse) can be defined as “a chronic pattern of frequent or excessive substance use in a way that is harmful to health and well-being.”

People who are addicted may exhibit these types of behavior:

  • Taking drugs without a prescription

  • Using illegal drugs

  • Using drugs for non-prescription reasons

  • Taking larger doses than prescribed

  • Snorting, injecting, or smoking drugs

  • Drinking excessively and regularly

Once a person becomes addicted to alcohol or drugs, their lives spiral into chaos. Their health, family, career, and community are all negatively affected. They cannot rehabilitate themselves. They have to have to enroll in a licensed recovery program.
